From Times Wire Reports

U.S. regulators approved an implantable contact lens that corrected nearsightedness and offered an alternative to laser surgery.

The Food and Drug Administration approved the tiny Verisyse lens, made by Netherlands-based Ophtec BV, for use in people with “healthy eyes” and “stable vision.”

In a statement, privately held Ophtec said the device would be marketed to nearsighted patients who may not be good candidates for laser surgery.
