From Times Staff and Wire Reports

Volcanic ash sprinkled over downtown Tokyo on Friday as one of Japan’s most active volcanoes erupted for a fourth straight day, blowing gray smoke a mile high.

Mount Asama, about 90 miles west of Tokyo, erupted almost continuously through the day, setting off close to 600 tremors, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. Winds scattered ash across a wide area southeast of the 8,474-foot mountain. Small amounts were detected in the capital for the first time since an eruption April 26, 1982.
