Rabbi Schulweis’ Righteous Struggle

Share

Thank you for calling attention to the compassionate heart and creative mind of Rabbi Harold Schulweis (“Of the Conflict in Sudan, Rabbi Vows ‘Never Again,’ ” Sept. 18). Always in the forefront in every fight for justice, he long ago convinced his own Jewish community that it is our obligation to support righteous Christians who risked their lives to save countless of us during the Holocaust. But he does not stop there: He keeps reminding us that all suffering humanity deserves our involvement and support.

After Sept. 11, he immediately set an example by reaching out to the Los Angeles Muslim community by attending services in one of their mosques to remind everyone that not all members of Islam are terrorists, and he invited their clergyman to return the visit. He has initiated and participated in interfaith seminars and services to foster support and understanding, as he did recently when several churches, mosques and synagogues, including his own Valley Beth Shalom, were firebombed by a deranged person.

The Valley Beth Shalom rabbi has inspired many other religious leaders to join him in his righteous struggle to bring peace and justice wherever it is needed.
