Poll: TV content troubles parents
Half of all parents interviewed in a new national survey say they’re not that worried that their children watched the Janet Jackson-Justin Timberlake Super Bowl halftime dance. More than such isolated incidents, parents fear the effect of daily exposure to sex and violence found in early evening shows, according to a Kaiser Family Foundation study released Thursday.
Parents said the content on TV is more troubling than that in movies, video games, music or on the Internet.
The report, “Parents, Media and Public Policy,” is based on a random telephone survey of 1,001 parents of children ages 2 to 17. It found that 15% of the respondents use the V-Chip, up from 7% in 2001. Twenty percent said they had never heard of TV ratings. And among those who were familiar with the ratings, 40% said the programs were not always categorized accurately.
