Shock Goes Big and Beats Liberty
The defending champion Detroit Shock, on the brink of elimination, extended its first-round WNBA series to the limit with a 76-66 victory over the New York Liberty in Game 2 of the best-of-three series Sunday at Madison Square Garden.
The Shock, playing without leading scorer Swin Cash since she tore knee ligaments on Sept. 11, made a lineup change, starting 6-foot-3 Barbara Farris at forward in place of 5-10 Merlakia Jones, who had been starting since Cash’s injury.
“Out of the blue, coming to the arena, it came to me to try something different,” said Detroit Coach Bill Laimbeer. “We started a big, strong lineup and went to a zone and tried to test their accuracy of their three-point shots.”
Detroit’s starting frontcourt combined for 44 points and 24 rebounds, compared to 18 points and 14 rebounds for New York’s.
