What About Osama?
Re “Death Penalty Turnaround,” Commentary, April 12: David Kaczynski rightfully has sympathy for his brother who is convicted of murder. His premise is that many of those now on death row might be innocent, mentally retarded or not properly represented at trial.
Does he really believe the likes of Osama bin Laden, with more than 3,000 murders on his hands, should be spared the death penalty? Does he believe that Timothy McVeigh, with more than 160 murders, should be serving life instead of having been executed?
He is correct only in the sense that the death penalty may become much more restricted -- to such cases as assassinations, mass murders and hired killings.
