Marriage and art

Re “Irreconcilable differences?” Opinion, July 30

It is interesting that Arthur Schopenhauer and August Strindberg believed that marriage and art were incompatible. Perhaps they didn’t listen to music because, at least in the case of J.S. Bach, who lived a century earlier, family life seems to have been compatible with his genius at composition. Bach was married twice and had 20 children. There seems to be no correlation between the ability to create great art and the artist’s family situation. It all depends on personal disposition.
