Mauritania’s new military strongman, who overthrew the president last week, assured politicians that no member of the 17-man junta would run in elections that he said would be held in less than two years.

Col. Ely Ould Mohammed Vall made the pledge in talks with heads of more than 30 political parties in the capital, said the leader of one of the groups.

Vall’s junta toppled Maaouya Ould Sid Ahmed Taya, who himself had seized power in 1984 in a coup. He fled to Niger.
