Police on Saturday charged a suspect in the July 21 attempted bombings in London with conspiracy to murder and possession of explosives -- the first charges to be filed in Britain against anyone accused in the plot.

Yasin Hassan Omar, 24, is suspected of trying to bomb a subway train near the Warren Street Station. The July 21 attempts came two weeks after 56 people, including four bombers, were killed in attacks on three subway trains and a bus.

Omar, who was arrested in Birmingham on July 27, faces three other charges: attempted murder; making or possessing an explosive substance with intent to endanger life or cause serious injury; and conspiracy to use explosives.

Each of the charges carries a maximum sentence of life imprisonment.

Two other suspects in the failed July 21 bombings, Muktar Said Ibrahim, 27, and Ramzi Mohammed, were arrested in London on July 29. A fourth, Hussain Osman, also known as Hamdi Isaac, was arrested in Rome and is being held there on international terrorism charges.
