Two Ciudad Juarez police officers were charged Monday in the rape of a U.S. tourist, authorities said.

Officers Gerardo Hinojosa and Juan Jose Castorena were accused of rape by a 24-year-old tourist from El Paso, who filed a complaint Saturday, Ciudad Juarez Police Chief Juan Salgado said. He said the officers had been suspended pending an investigation.

The woman told investigators that the officers stopped her and her husband as they were leaving a nightclub and arrested him on suspicion of drinking in public. When she offered them a $50 bribe to let her husband go, the officers put her in their truck and raped her, Salgado said.

The officers denied the charges and said the woman was drunk when they arrested her husband. State investigators said a rape test supported her claims.

Ciudad Juarez is just across the border from El Paso.
