Irene on Course to Hit Hurricane Strength

From Times Wire Reports

Tropical Storm Irene could reach hurricane strength today, but it is on a course that should eventually curve away from the East Coast, forecasters said.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami predicted that Irene would be about 350 miles east of the mouth of Chesapeake Bay by Tuesday, moving north.

Normally, there have been only two named storms by this time in the Atlantic hurricane season, which began June 1 and ends Nov. 30. Irene became the earliest ninth named storm on record when it developed Sunday.
