Military’s Message to the Gaza Settlers

The Israeli military commander issued this letter to “Israeli residents of the Gaza Strip.” It was hand-delivered Monday to about 100 homes and given to representatives of settlements that did not allow troops to enter. The army said the eviction order was binding whether or not settlers accepted individual notification at home. The military provided this official translation:

In accordance with the ‘Implementation of the Disengagement Plan 2005’ Law and following the decision of the Israeli government, you are required to leave your home and the Gaza Strip today, Monday, Aug. 15, 2005.

Those residents who will leave the Gaza Strip before Wednesday, Aug. 17, will receive all possible assistance from the IDF [Israel Defense Forces]. Starting on the 17th, the IDF must begin enforcing the evacuation, in order to implement the decision and the law.

This is a difficult situation for us all. The IDF and the Israeli police share in the sorrow and pain you are feeling and expressing. Nevertheless we will see this mission to its end, while providing any possible help and assistance.

I call to you to respect the law, the IDF and the Israeli police.

Respectfully,

Dan Harel, Major General

Head of Southern Command
