‘Makeover’ isn’t enough for ‘Town’

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” was last week’s most-watched first-run TV show, but viewers didn’t stay tuned to ABC for the premiere of “My Kind of Town,” according to Nielsen Media Research figures released Tuesday.

The second of two new back-to-back “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” episodes, programmed in an attempt to increase the audience for “My Kind of Town,” was seen by more than 11.7 million people Sunday.

It was the second-most-watched program of the week, trailing only CBS’ “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation,” which drew nearly 13.9 million viewers Thursday.

The premiere of “My Kind of Town,” a variety-comedy hybrid bringing 200 residents of a small town to a New York City studio to compete in comedic games and gags, was only able to keep 57% of “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition’s” audience -- 6.7 million-plus viewers -- to finish 25th for the week.

CBS had seven of the week’s eight most-watched shows and was the most-watched network for the 11th consecutive week, averaging nearly 7.3 million viewers. It also led among viewers ages 25 to 54, its core audience, for the seventh consecutive week.

Fox continued its success among young-adult viewers, finishing first among viewers 18 to 34 for the 31st consecutive week. Fox had four of the five most-watched shows among viewers 18 to 34, led by the animated comedy “Family Guy,” which was also the week’s most-watched show among viewers 12 to 17.

ABC led among men ages 18 to 49 and 25 to 54.

The story was very different locally, however. In Los Angeles, Spanish-language outlet KMEX-TV Channel 34 was the dominant station last week with 12 of the 13 highest-rated programs, led by its telenovela “La Madrastra.”
