The death toll from days of flooding across Europe rose to 43 on Friday, with recovery operations underway in some spots but other areas still covered by slowly receding waters.

A 72-year-old Swiss woman who fell into the Landquart River in Kueblis on Tuesday was found dead on the shore of Lake Constance near Kressbronn, Germany, about 90 miles away, police said in Chur, Switzerland.

In Brienz, at the foot of the Alps, soldiers guarded against looting and large sections of the town were cordoned off. Authorities evacuated a retirement home and two hotels. Local officials said the evacuees might be able to return Sunday.

In Bern, the Swiss capital, flood waters from the Aare River lapped gardens and houses in the Matte quarter.

Waters were also receding and people were cleaning up in Austria. But meteorologists predicted heavy rain in the south in coming days and authorities were bracing for more mudslides, state television reported.
