Braude set the standard for politicians to follow

Share

It is hard to imagine Southern California without the recreational opportunities spearheaded by former Los Angeles City Councilman Marvin Braude (obituary, Dec. 9).

As an avid cyclist, I oftentimes saw Braude and his wife, Marjorie, cycling on the bike path along the beach. I always made a point of thanking him for the bike path, though his reaction was always bemused.

I suggest renaming the bike path in his honor. He was a man of relentless conscience and impeccable integrity who did more public good than any politician in memory.

His career serves as a civics lesson for all politicians who follow. If you want my vote, think of what Braude would do. He will be missed.

Years ago, I encountered Braude at the Music Center. I approached him and thanked him for trimming the trees in my neighborhood. He stood in amazement. His reply was that he was not used to people greeting him with thanks.

I also replied I had ridden with him and his wife at the opening of the bike path at the beach, and was still riding it often. He paid attention to his constituents like none before or since.
