“tick ... tick ... BOOM!”: The autobiographical musical by and about the late Jonathan Larson, the creator of “Rent,” makes a deeply moving West Coast debut. Though “Rent” remains Larson’s only fully realized musical theater legacy (he died from an aneurism at age 36), this production offers a more revealing look at his talent. Originally performed as a musical monologue, the material was posthumously reworked by “Proof” author David Auburn and Scott Schwartz, who directed the off-Broadway and London productions and helms this staging. A few cliches and labored expositions notwithstanding, they’ve produced a fluid narrative.

Ends Sunday at the Rubicon Theatre, 1006 E. Main St., Ventura. (805) 667-2900.
