690,000 U.S. Troops Expected in Case of War
From Times Wire Reports
The U.S. would dispatch 690,000 troops and 2,000 warplanes in case of war on the Korean peninsula, a South Korean policy paper said.
The statement appears aimed at easing concerns that U.S. troops in South Korea are being used as a rapid worldwide deployment force.
A Pentagon spokesman, Lt. Cmdr. Greg Hicks, said he could not comment on the report. The size of any U.S. deployment in a Korean war, he said, would depend on the conflict’s nature.
