HIV Rate Doubles Over Decade for Blacks in U.S.
The HIV infection rate has doubled among blacks in the United States over a decade while holding steady among whites -- evidence of a widening racial gap in the epidemic, researchers said in Boston.
The findings were released at the 12th Annual Retrovirus Conference, the world’s chief scientific gathering on the disease. Researchers attributed the higher rate to such factors as poverty and poor healthcare.

Animal rights activists are upset by a new candy from Kraft Foods Inc. that’s shaped like critters run over by cars -- complete with tire treads.
The fruity-flavored Trolli Road Kill Gummi Candy -- in shapes of partly flattened snakes, chickens and squirrels -- fosters animal cruelty, according to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in Trenton. Kraft said that the candy was not meant to be offensive.
30 Ice Fishermen Are Rescued From Lake Erie
About 30 ice fishermen were rescued from Lake Erie after becoming stranded on a huge chunk of ice that broke away and drifted about four miles from shore. No injuries were reported.
One of the fishermen called the Coast Guard on his cellphone, and rescue crews used boats and a helicopter to bring them -- and a dog -- back to shore in Oak Harbor. They had to leave their vehicles and gear.
