Gene Scott: a Crusader for Religious Rights

Share

I read of Gene Scott’s passing (Feb. 23). He was an educator, teacher, independent thinker, a battler. He helped kill legislation designed to put churches under receivership in California. The attempt was being made by then-Atty. Gen. Evelle Younger. Scott fought to preserve the rights of other churches when the anti-religious radicals sought to destroy the rights of individuals to make up their own minds as to the choice of their religious affiliation. Scott professed the right of the human spirit to seek freedom, and he honored his parents. He was fiercely loyal to those who were willing to hold to their own spiritual journey.

L. Ron Hubbard once wrote that “a being is only as valuable as he can serve others.” Gene served his whole life. Different? Yes. Brilliant? Yes! He used to say “I don’t preach ... I teach.” Gone in body but living spirit.
