U.S. Should Pay Off Afghan Opium Farmers
Re “An Afghan Quandary for the U.S.,” Jan. 2: The Bush administration needs to consider another plan for opium farming in Afghanistan. Rather than spend millions of dollars on counter-narcotic programs, we should use the money to pay the opium farmers to destroy their own crops. We then use financial incentives to motivate Afghan farmers to substitute crops to feed their people. Follow the money trail for a simple solution.
