The Tragedy of War Is Its Lasting Legacy

Megan K. Stack accurately wrote about the Iraq war in her article “Still in Shadow” (Dec. 19): “The blood will flow for months, months will turn to years, and thousands of people will be killed, maimed or torn by grief. . . . For the fight for Iraq is not settled, and the war’s legacy is unfolding still.”

But what I find so disturbing, in addition to this ongoing war, is how little concern my fellow Americans are expressing about this tragedy. American wars have become a remote, televised problem that only clutters the daily grind. Did you imagine that after the Vietnam War we would ever allow the country to get involved in such a horrendous experience again?
