Chancellor Won’t Back Bid to Run Los Alamos

The chancellor of the University of Texas System said in Dallas that he would recommend against the university making a bid to run Los Alamos National Laboratory.
The University of California has run the New Mexico lab since its creation as a top-secret World War II project to develop the atomic bomb. But Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham decided to put the contract up for bid. His decision came after a series of management failures and security problems.
The University of California has not decided whether to bid to continue managing the lab.
