A cold spell gripping the Canadian capital, Ottawa, is so intense that houses have started to make loud cracking noises, prompting worried citizens to report break-ins and gunshots.
Spokeswoman Monique Ackland said police received about 20 calls when temperatures dipped to 40 degrees below zero.
