Brazilian Controversy
Re “Brazil’s President Flies Into Controversy Over New Plane,” Jan. 17: Let me point out that the plane was not bought by Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva for private use, but by the presidency of the republic, and it will be used by all future presidents of Brazil. There is no space for controversies here.
It is only cheap political gossip to accuse Lula of being a “big spender” or anything similar. After all, the new plane introduces a new image of Brazil, much better than that projected by former President Fernando Henrique Cardoso, who seemed like Monsieur Hulot (the movie character played by French comic Jacques Tati) in the old Boeing 707.
