War Baby

Joel Pett is the Pulitzer Prize-winning editorial cartoonist of the Lexington Herald-Leader. His work also appears in USA Today.

Glenn McCoy’s cartoon says it all. Lady Liberty is more than a little bit pregnant. Being instinctively skeptical -- not to mention members of the liberal media conspiracy -- most cartoonists have lined up our line drawings against the war in Iraq. Executive decisions were met with extensive derision. But now it’s our baby too.

No matter what our prewar positions on abstinence were, or whether we thought the invasion should have been aborted, we’re all the proud parents of whatever emerges from next week’s tentative exercise in democracy in Iraq. Let’s just pray it’s healthy -- and has a few of its Uncle Sam’s features.

Antiwar cartoonists, like the rest of the L-world, are painted into a corner in which to win is to lose. If things don’t go well, there’ll be no glee among the we-told-you-sos. Having held our noses but not our tongues, we now hold our collective breath. ‘Cause it’s our baby. We either make the relationship work, and raise it right, or there’s no telling what the child-support payments will be.
