Cabinet to Resign; Early Vote to Be Called
From Times Wire Reports
Romanian Prime Minister Calin Tariceanu said his Cabinet would resign and early elections would be called after a court blocked justice reforms required by the European Union.
Romania wants to join the EU in 2007. Parliament can overturn the court’s decision with a two-thirds majority, but the ruling coalition lacks the votes for such a move.
Tariceanu met with President Traian Basescu to discuss the situation and later announced his resignation, saying legal procedures to allow for new elections would begin.
