Central Park Killer May Be Headed Back to Jail
Robert Chambers, freed after serving 15 years in prison for strangling a woman in Central Park, pleaded guilty Tuesday to charges of misdemeanor drug possession and unlicensed driving.
Under a plea agreement, Chambers was promised a reduced sentence of three months in jail. Sentencing was set for Aug. 29, and Chambers remained free on $1,000 bail.
Chambers, 38, left prison in February 2003 after serving time for the 1986 killing of an 18-year-old woman during a tryst in Central Park.
Last fall, Chambers was stopped in his car. A court complaint said a computer check showed his license was suspended for failure to answer a summons for running a red light. The complaint also said police found drug residue on a tinfoil packet in the back seat.
The judge in the case said the drug was heroin.
