Fighting Kills 13, Including American
Rebels in Afghanistan attacked a U.S.-led patrol, setting off a gun battle that killed an American soldier, an Afghan soldier and 11 rebels, the U.S. military said.
Three U.S. troops and an Afghan soldier were hurt in the fighting in southern Oruzgan province. U.S. fighter jets and attack helicopters responded to the assault. Eight insurgents were captured, the U.S. said.
An upsurge in militant attacks has left more than 750 people dead since March.
Since 2001, 173 U.S. troops have been killed in Afghanistan or on missions related to the U.S. effort there.
