Scrushy Jury to Work Longer Each Day

An Alabama jury has agreed to work an extra hour each day to try to break an impasse in the corporate fraud trial of former HealthSouth Corp. Chief Executive Richard Scrushy, a federal court official said.
The jury has been split on the main charge against Scrushy, who is accused by the U.S. government of directing a $2.7-billion accounting fraud at the medical rehabilitation firm. The jury has deliberated about 4 1/2 hours each day since getting the case May 19.
The decision to extend daily deliberations came several days after U.S. District Judge Karon Bowdre, who is presiding over the trial in Birmingham, urged the jury to consider doing so.
