From Times Wire Reports

Police in the northern border city of Nuevo Laredo opened fire on a convoy of federal agents sent to boost security in the area, Mexico’s attorney general said.

One agent was severely hurt Saturday as more than 40 Nuevo Laredo police officers intercepted five vehicles carrying members of the Federal Agency of Investigation.

The convoy’s passengers apparently had identified themselves as federal agents, but police opened fire, the attorney general’s office said. Mexican organized crime groups often pose as federal agents. Nuevo Laredo’s police chief, Alejandro Dominguez Coello, was gunned down last week within hours of taking office.
