Retailers Are Paying for Lax Policies on IDs

“Industry at Odds Over ID Theft Liability” (March 7) raises the obvious question:
If retailers are taking the financial hit for identity theft, why don’t stores make it standard practice to ask customers for a picture ID before approving charge transactions?
Some stores already require this, and as a charge card user I’m happy when they do. It shows that the retailer is paying attention and trying to protect legitimate customers.
