A 1970s-era Russian turboprop plane carrying oil workers crashed and caught fire trying to land near an oil port along Russia’s Arctic coast. At least 29 people were killed in the crash, which officials said occurred after the plane’s tail began to fall apart.

Two dozen survivors, shivering in temperatures of 11 degrees below zero, called authorities on a satellite phone from the crash site near Varandey, 1,100 miles northeast of Moscow.

Rescuers quickly reached the site, officials said.
