From Times Wire Services

Israel charged nuclear whistle-blower Mordechai Vanunu with violating the terms of his release from prison by speaking to foreign reporters and trying to visit the West Bank.

Vanunu, who was not taken into custody, could be jailed for up to two years if convicted, the Justice Ministry said.

Judicial officials said they were unaware of any intention to arrest Vanunu, who is reviled in Israel but admired by anti-nuclear activists worldwide.

A former technician at Israel’s top-secret Dimona nuclear reactor, Vanunu, now 50, served an 18-year prison term for spilling atomic secrets to Britain’s Sunday Times in 1986.
