Measles Kills Hundreds Despite Vaccine Efforts
Hundreds of children have died in an upsurge in measles cases in Nigeria, despite a series of local vaccination campaigns aimed at combating the disease.
At least 589 children have died of measles so far this year in Nigeria, which, along with India and Pakistan, is one of the countries most affected by the disease.
Most of the victims have been children under 5 who lived in northern Nigeria, according to figures from the World Health Organization and the Nigerian Red Cross. Measles epidemics typically peak in March in Nigeria.
