Azusa Advances in NAIA

Azusa Pacific eliminated top-seeded and defending national champion Mountain State, W.Va., from the NAIA Division I men’s tournament with an 82-66 victory in the quarterfinals Saturday night at Kansas City, Mo.

Larry English scored a game-high 27 points for the Cougars (28-9), who held Mountain State (31-4) to 33.8% shooting.

Ninth-seeded Azusa Pacific will play fourth-seeded Robert Morris (29-4) in Monday night’s semifinals.

John Brown, Ark. 58, Biola 56 -- Brandon Cole made three free throws in the last 26 seconds to give the Golden Eagles (22-11) the victory over the Eagles. They will play Carroll, Mont. (28-6) in the semifinals.

Matthew Garnett missed a three-point shot at the buzzer for Biola (28-8), which nearly completed its third comeback in the tournament. The Eagles’ Daniel Rose scored a game-high 28 points.

NAIA DIVISION I WOMEN

Union University (33-5) upset top-seeded Vanguard, 87-72, to earn a berth in the semifinals of the NAIA Division I tournament at Jackson, Tenn.

Vanguard (32-4), the Golden State Athletic Conference champion, was led by the tournament’s leading scorer, Kelly Schmidt, who had a game-high 26 points. She finished with 84 points in three games.

Point Loma Nazarene 59, Freed-Hardeman, Tenn. 42 -- The second-seeded Sea Lions (33-4) advanced to the semifinals for the first time by beating the top-seeded Lions (30-7). Point Loma Nazarene will play Union, Tenn., Monday night.

NCAA DIVISION III

Wisconsin Stevens Point (29-3) repeated as men’s NCAA Division III champion with a 73-49 victory over Rochester (25-5) at Salem, Va. The Pointers are the first team to win consecutive titles since Wisconsin Platteville in 1998-99.... Millikin (29-2) won its first NCAA Division III women’s title with a 70-50 victory over Randolph-Macon (30-2) at Virginia Beach, Va.
