Critic of Crackdown Can Leave Home, Wife Says

A Chinese military surgeon who petitioned the government last year to admit that it made mistakes in its 1989 Tiananmen Square crackdown on pro- democracy demonstrators has been released from house arrest, his wife said. Authorities told Jiang Yanyong, 73, this week that he was allowed out but did not give a reason for their decision, said his wife, Hua Zhongwei.
