Truck Driver Convicted of Immigrant Smuggling

From Times Wire Reports

The truck driver convicted in the nation’s deadliest immigrant smuggling attempt has avoided the death penalty but faces a possible life sentence for his role in the deaths of 19 people.

Jurors in Houston spared the life of Tyrone Williams, 34, because they could not agree on whether he bore direct responsibility for the deaths. Instead, he was convicted on 38 counts of transporting illegal immigrants.

“We don’t give the death penalty in this country for an accident,” defense lawyer Craig Washington said.
