Court Clears Three Convicted in ’69 Blast
Italy’s highest court cleared three men who had been sentenced to life in prison for a deadly 1969 bombing of a Milan bank.
The Supreme Court confirmed a decision last year by a lower court to quash the 2001 convictions of Carlo Maria Maggi, Delfo Zorzi and Giancarlo Rognoni on charges of planning and executing the blast in Milan’s Piazza Fontana that killed 16 and injured more than 80.
Prosecutors and the families of victims accused the state of trying to cover up the truth about the attack, and previous trials were either called off for lack of evidence or because fresh allegations surfaced.
