The United Methodist Church is appealing a panel’s decision to reinstate Irene Elizabeth Stroud, a lesbian minister who had been defrocked for declaring to her congregation that she was in a relationship with a woman.

The Rev. Thomas Hall, counsel for the church, said in Philadelphia that he consulted with eastern Pennsylvania Bishop Marcus Matthews, who decided to appeal to the church’s Judicial Council.
