DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — The Islamic militant group Ansar al Sunna said on its website Monday that it had abducted a Japanese national who worked at a U.S. base in Iraq.
A British security firm that hired Akihiko Saito, 44, said he had been missing since an attack on the company’s employees in a remote area of Iraq on Sunday. Several other workers also were unaccounted for.
The militants posted a picture of a Japanese passport bearing Saito’s name as well as an identification card.
Ansar said it had seized the man after ambushing cars near the town of Hit in western Iraq. It said others in the convoy were killed. The claims could not immediately be verified.
