Looking to Auto History for a Crush-Proof Roof

Share

“Ford, Volvo Clash on Roof Design” (May 4) brings to mind the Airflow, which Chrysler offered from 1934 to 1937.

The Airflow had a roof ringed with a steel tubing cage, much like a Nascar race car.

Anyone who has seen a Nascar race car flip over at 180 mph can appreciate the benefit of having a roof that does not cave in on the driver who is solidly belted in place.

Chrysler had films made showing Airflows going over cliffs with their roofs showing little or no damage.

If a company could build a car in the 1930s that would survive a rollover without its roof caving in, why with all our modem technology can’t one be built today that will not crush?
