A U.S. soldier was killed Saturday in southern Afghanistan when a bomb exploded beside his vehicle, an attack claimed by Taliban militants.

Three soldiers were wounded in the blast in troubled Zabol province, the U.S. military said in a statement.

A Taliban official, speaking by telephone from an undisclosed location, claimed responsibility for what he said was a remote-controlled bomb.

The dead soldier’s name was being withheld pending notification of his family, the U.S. military said.

The United States has lost more than 140 military personnel since sending troops to Afghanistan in late 2001.

Most of the deaths have been in accidents.

About 18,300 foreign troops, most of them Americans, remain in the nation, battling Taliban and other militants.
