Liberals Retain Hold on Parliament
Canada’s minority Liberal government retained control of Parliament, winning an election for a seat in Labrador that could have cost it the balance of power and led to its collapse.
A victory in the special election in the remote Atlantic region gave Prime Minister Paul Martin a little breathing room after his ruling Liberal Party came within one vote last week of being toppled on a confidence vote in Parliament.
A Conservative win for the seat vacated by the death of a Liberal member would have given the opposition the option of triggering a new election when it saw fit.
