Bush Promises Tsunami Aid, Backs Military Ties

President Bush promised Indonesia $400 million for tsunami relief, nearly half of the total funds pledged by the U.S. government after the disaster.
Bush, who met with Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Washington, also endorsed close military ties with the country.
Congress cut military aid to Indonesia in 1999 to protest the army’s role in fomenting militia violence in East Timor. But the Bush administration has been eager to restore military ties to bolster anti-terrorism efforts.
