A combustible history

Wildfires in the past century have burned nearly all the natural landscape that can burn in Southern California. Rugged slopes covered with grasses, brush and forests combine with dry air and winds to make fires a seasonal certainty. This year’s rains may make for an unusually severe fire season because they have produced an abundance of brush.
