Sharpton and Jackson Do Public a Disservice

Share

Re “Sheriff’s New Tactic on Shooting: Contrition,” May 22: Thank you for confirming what has long appeared obvious. The people you call “activists” aren’t really interested in finding solutions to problems like the sheriff’s deputies’ horrific shooting gallery on a Compton street. When those responsible are contrite and working with the community to avoid a repeat, why do these “activists” feel the need to compete?

At least they may finally be realizing that one of their favorite tactics actually undermines their credibility.

Every time they call in Al Sharpton and Jesse Jackson to deliver another rant, a potentially sympathetic public reacts with eyes rolling and heads shaking. Sharpton and Jackson just create another barrier to overcome on the way to the necessary dialogue and action that can build a safer community.
