Philippine security forces Saturday captured a Muslim extremist leader who is also wanted by the U.S. for attacks on Americans, President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo said.

Arroyo congratulated police and soldiers for nabbing Radulan Sahiron, describing him as “a very notorious leader” of Abu Sayyaf. The group has been blamed for many deadly bombings and the kidnapping of Westerners, including Martin and Gracia Burnham, a missionary couple from Kansas.

Philippine National Police Chief Arturo Lomibao said Sahiron -- Abu Sayyaf’s chief of staff -- was captured in a special operation in Zamboanga Sibugay province, about 480 miles south of Manila.
