From Times Wire Reports

Court-appointed experts have determined that former Chilean dictator Augusto Pinochet is fit to stand trial on human rights charges, prosecutor Hernan Quezada said.

Previous attempts to prosecute Pinochet were blocked because of concerns about his health, but Quezada said doctors believed that the ex-dictator tried “to make the symptoms of his condition appear worse than they really are.”

Quezada said the doctors agreed with a 3-year-old diagnosis that Pinochet suffers from mild dementia, but said it was not severe enough to make him unfit to stand trial. Pinochet, who turns 90 on Nov. 25, also suffers from diabetes and arthritis and has a pacemaker.
