School reform turns into a sore subject
Re “The ABCs of school reform,” editorial, Nov. 20
Once again, The Times is blaming teachers and their union for the Los Angeles Unified School District’s inadequate education. Not allowing teachers to work where they feel comfortable and have worked to build local school programs would create ill will and the loss of teacher initiative.
Why doesn’t The Times expose the grotesque waste by Supt. Roy Romer and the upper administrators, including building a $50-million parking garage for themselves?
Putting power into the hands of one politician won’t solve the problems created by a top-down administration and a “bigger is better” mentality. Your support for this shows that you don’t understand the real problems teachers face every day.

Your editorial intimating that a mayor is better equipped to manage part of the education process than school boards or teachers is reminiscent of Proposition 174 a few years ago, which sought to begin the eradication of public education.
A word to the wise: Criticism comes easier than craftsmanship.
