Authorities on Wednesday identified the suspected car thief who led police on a long car chase before being shot by an Anaheim officer.

Angel Carrillo, 27, a parolee from Moreno Valley with convictions for car theft and possession of stolen property and drugs, was shot three times in the abdomen Tuesday night in Garden Grove. Carrillo remained in stable condition Wednesday at UCI Medical Center in Orange, said Garden Grove Police Lt. Mike Handfield.

Tuesday’s chase began on the Santa Ana Freeway in Santa Fe Springs when a California Highway Patrol officer spotted a reportedly stolen Infiniti sport utility vehicle. The pursuit made its way through Anaheim, Stanton and Cypress before reaching the Garden Grove Freeway.

Carrillo abandoned the car near the Magnolia Street exit and ran across freeway lanes and down an offramp, Handfield said. When Carrillo reached Trask Avenue, an Anaheim police officer who was chasing on foot shot Carrillo when he turned toward the officer holding a semiautomatic gun, Handfield said.

Carrillo could be booked on suspicion of attempted murder of a police officer, car theft, violation of parole, gun possession and felony evasion with possible gang enhancements, Handfield said.
